One of the joys of all-in-one chalk paint is that it seals itself. But a few pieces benefit from extra protection — here's how to decide.

Do you need a top coat?

For most furniture — dressers, shelves, frames, accent pieces — no. Chalk It! cures to a hard, wipeable matte finish on its own. Add a clear matte top coat only for high-traffic or wet surfaces:

  • Kitchen tables and desktops (daily use)
  • Kitchen cabinets (grease, steam, constant touch)
  • Bathroom vanities and painted tile (moisture)
  • Outdoor furniture (rain and sun — use a weatherproof top coat)

Dry time vs. cure time

The paint is dry to the touch in about 30 minutes and recoats the same day. Full curing — when the finish reaches maximum hardness — takes longer. Treat a fresh piece gently for a few days and avoid heavy use or wet cleaning while it cures.

Caring for your piece

Once cured, clean painted surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Skip harsh scrubbing and abrasive cleaners, and your finish will look great for years.
