Your piece is painted and looks great. This optional lesson is where you add character and make it unmistakably yours.
Distressing (aged charm)
Once dry, gently sand the spots that would naturally wear — edges, corners, raised details, around handles. A little reveals the wood beneath. Follow real wear patterns and step back often; less is usually more.
Two-tone (instant custom look)
One of the biggest trends right now: paint the body one color and the drawers, top or details another. A neutral body with a bold accent, or a dark base with a light top, reads as designer-made with almost no extra effort.
Color blending (depth & ombré)
Because chalk colors mix freely, you can blend two shades while wet for a soft ombré, or layer a darker shade in the recesses for depth. Work quickly and feather the edges with a dry brush.
Practice on a scrap first
Every effect is easier the second time. Try distressing or blending on an offcut before touching your real piece — it costs nothing and builds confidence.
